Oops…Honey, I Accidentally Recorded Over The Game!

SuperBowl1

The story is as old as the VCR. It’s your anniversary; your wife suggests watching the wedding video; you pop the tape in the VCR; and oops…you accidentally recorded the big game over your wedding! Welcome to the doghouse.

Or maybe she recorded a cooking show over your game. Whatever. But odds are pretty good, that if you owned a VCR, someone accidentally recorded over something important. But who would have guessed that this could happen to something like the only recordings of the Super Bowl!

You see, in 1967, tapes that NBC and CBS used to record on were expensive. So tapes were reused and things got recorded over often. And, in 1967, when the 1st Super Bowl was played, it wasn’t nearly as popular as it is now. 30 second ads went for a few thousand dollars in comparison with the millions they will cost this year.

So, amazingly, folks at NBC and CBS recorded…wait for it…soap operas, over the master tapes to save money! And until recently, the 1st Super Bowl was thought to be completely lost. But using modern technology, camera views from NFL game video, and the audio recording dubbed in, the 1967 Super Bowl re-aired last week for the first time in almost 50 years.

The game is nostalgic for many reasons. It was the 1st “Super” Bowl; it reminds us of a simpler time and a purer game; it was one of Vince Lombardi’s last Super Bowls; and 14 future Hall of Famers played in that day. By the way, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. But the game will go down in history more for being “found” when it was “lost” than for what the scoreboard read.

Finding important lost things is fun. Did you know it is a favorite theme of scripture too? In the Old Testament, there was a King named, Josiah. And while work was being done on the Temple, they found scrolls of the Torah that had been lost (2 Kings 22)! They experienced both grief over learning they had been doing things wrong and great joy over committing themselves to the Lord.

In the New Testament, there are several lost things that are found in Luke 15: A Lost Sheep, A Lost Coin, and A Lost Son. Jesus uses these examples to remind us that even Angels in Heaven rejoice when one lost sinner is found. “Found,” as we learn about it in Scripture, means to be a sinner who comes to know the Lord…to return home to our Father’s house, where we belong.

What about you, friend? When the great books are opened in heaven, there won’t be any lost recordings, only lost souls. Will you be recorded as “found” or “lost” on that day? Amazing grace…what once was lost can be found! Get in touch, and let’s talk more about how you can be found on that great day.

Something Bugging You?

bugsYou’re surrounded. You had no idea. I mean, sure…the occasional bug…you’ve seen it. Maybe you smashed it. Maybe you sprayed it. Maybe you felt like you handled the problem. Think again!

According to a recent study by Matt Bertone, an entomologist at North Carolina State University, nearly 600 kinds of arthropods could be in your home right now. The average home studied had approximately 100, including: spiders, centipedes, mites, lice, beetles, roaches, flies, crickets, etc. Sleep well…and don’t let the bedbugs bite!

Of course, it turns out that this is pretty normal. No “bedbugs” were actually found in any of the homes studied; and only 3 homes had the harmful kind of roaches. For the most part, we co-exist daily, without incident, with hundreds, if not thousands, of bugs living in, under, and around our homes. And while that might send Entomophobes, Acaraphobes, Arachnophobes, and others into cold sweats, for the most part, there is no danger.

Yet, we spend billions of dollars each year on sprays, traps, lures, detection, ejection, and extermination of the little critters. We don’t want the presence of even one to be seen in our houses. We run to smash, spray, and force out of the house, even the smallest of them.

But what about sin, friend? Did you know it is far more harmful and far more prevalent in our houses and lives? Did you know it lurks around every corner and hides in every crevice? It is even “crouching at the door” and “desires to have you” (Genesis 4:4-7)!

What do we do when we see sins in our houses? Run to smash them? Or do we ignore them? Perhaps we casually stroll to handle them when we “get around to it?”

We are called to kill sins (Romans 8:13), not ignore them. The Bible tells us that sin leads to death (Romans 6:23). But if we will bring our sins into the open and confess them, God will forgive and purify them (1 John 1:7-9). Give it some thought…then go smash some sins!

A Cure With Proof!

lumosity-logoYou’ve heard the claims: “Train your brain, cure memory loss, and stave off dementia!” Brain puzzles are becoming big business. But according to the FTC, at least one company didn’t have a shred of scientific research to prove their claims. And now they will pay millions in fines.

Consider the following statement by Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection:

“Lumosity preyed on consumers’ fears about age-related cognitive decline, suggesting their games could stave off memory loss, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s disease. But Lumosity simply did not have the science to back up its ads.”

Lumosity claimed that their training would “1) improve performance on everyday tasks, in school, at work, and in athletics; 2) delay age-related cognitive decline and protect against mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease; and 3) reduce cognitive impairment associated with health conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, ADHD, the side effects of chemotherapy, and Turner syndrome, and that scientific studies proved these benefits.”

The “scientific studies” they had? Testimonials given by people who had received iPads and trips to San Francisco to say the product worked for them.

We have all been tempted to accept the claims of a panacea (“cure all” for what ails you). But the truth is, no physical panacea exists. But spiritually speaking, there is good news…an actual panacea – a cure for sins that ail you – the flesh and blood of Christ.

In John 6:53-54, Jesus made a bold claim that only those who eat and drink of His flesh and blood, would have life in them and be raised in the last day. Then He proved, with power, that He could make those claims by many signs and wonders. The greatest of which was the undeniable proof of His death, burial, and resurrection.

Want a true cure for what ails you? Jesus explained the mystery of His words to those who misunderstood Him to mean cannibalism or that the bread and wine literally become His flesh and blood: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life (John 6:63).

And unlike the claims that Lumosity gave that their product worked, no one was paid off to present the truth. Rather, witnesses received torture and death. And they rejoiced “that they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name” of Christ (Acts 5:41). The greatest panacea of all came at the greatest cost of all.

Spiritually consume Him today, and be cured!
