Sweet Lies?

sweet-liesSo…sugar walked into a research lab one day and paid some researchers to blame saturated fat for weight gain and heart issues. The researchers took the money and said, “no problem.” Still waiting on the punch-line for this joke? Hmmm…sorry – there isn’t one; it isn’t a joke, and it isn’t funny.

Stanton Glantz, is a professor of medicine at U.C.S.F., and is one of the authors of a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The article brings to light an effort by the sugar industry to systematically hide the effects of sugar by blaming fat. The findings are clear: “They were able to derail the discussion about sugar for decades.”

In 1967, a group called the “Sugar Research Foundation” paid three Harvard scientists to publish papers with the instructions that saturated fat, not sugar, be blamed for weight gain and heart disease. Until 1984, researchers didn’t have to disclose their funding sources, so no one knew that sugar was paying the bill. One of those researchers, D. Mark Hegsted, became the head of nutrition for the US Department of Agriculture, drafting dietary guidelines that helped steer nutrition policies in this country for decades. So…no surprise, saturated fat, not sugar, has been public enemy #1.

Now, saturated fat isn’t blame free. And it probably doesn’t surprise anyone that sugar told “sweet lies.” Last year, for example, the NY Times disclosed that Coca-Cola had been paying millions of dollars to researchers who promised to downplay the link between sugary drinks and obesity. Candy makers have done the same…and worse.

But guess what? We are just as bad!

The truth is, people have been shifting blame since there were people! In the Garden of Eden, Adam blamed “the woman” and God rather than accepting the responsibility for his actions (Genesis 3:12). James tells us that our sin is our own. We must not blame God or say that He tempts us (James 1:13-18) “The devil made me do it,” is never an acceptable excuse.

We are responsible for our sins. Thankfully, though, God didn’t leave us without help. Because of Jesus’ sacrificial grace, we can be forgiven of our sins. By confession, we literally “say the same as” God – “guilty!” And if we confess our sins, He is just and faithful and will forgive us (1 John 1:9).

Are you still saying the devil made you do it? Still shifting blame on others? Admit your faults…and look to the forgiving grace God offers through Jesus today.

Sorry, Kanye, But You Aren’t God…And We Aren’t Either

book-of-yeezusTo say that Kanye West has an ego is quite an understatement. He believes one would have to go back to Beethoven to find his equal; he has compared himself to Picasso; and he has claimed, “I am Steve Jobs,” and “I am Walt Disney.”

But his claims to be on par with Jesus and his song “I am God” pushed the very edge of megalomania. And now there’s more fuel for his ego! In a new book, “The Book of Yeezus,” Kanye fans rewrote Genesis to replace every reference to God with the singer’s name. That’s right! “In the beginning, KANYE created the Heavens and the Earth!”

Now, this might seem like harmless foolishness to you. And obviously, it is pretty easy to dismiss as nonsense. After all, Kanye isn’t an infinite being; he isn’t omniscient; he isn’t omnipotent; he isn’t omnipresent; and well, he can’t speak matter into existence.

But consider this: isn’t this latest blasphemy just the logical conclusion of our society? Isn’t this where idolizing singers, athletes, actors, and politicians had to take us? Rewriting Genesis may seem outlandish, but it points out a far bigger flaw in America today – out of control egos in each one of us. What began with “every man is king of his house,” has become, “every man his own god.”

You see, Kanye’s ego might be a little bigger than most. And we might not say it as boldly as he does. But there are a lot of folks running around these days with the attitude that, they too, are God. They make their own rules and their own morality…they are masters of their destiny.

In the Bible, we see an example of where Kanye-sized egos take us as individuals and as a society. Nebuchadnezzar ruled a big kingdom – the Babylonian empire. In Daniel 4, looking on his kingdom, he asked, “Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” Bad idea.

God lowered Nebuchadnezzar, and made him like one of the beasts of the field, acting insane and eating grass. It wasn’t until he recognized God as the highest ruler and King of Heaven that all his “reason returned.” Ultimately, though, Babylon was overthrown by the Persians due to the ego of invulnerability. Perhaps it is time for reason to return to the rest of us!

Actors, singers, athletes, and politicians are not gods…not even a little. Neither is Kanye. And neither are you. Nor am I. We are often selfish, at times egotistical, and always flawed human beings. We need salvation from the burden of our sins.

And thankfully, God has provided us with the perfect example. Jesus, God in the flesh, came to show us what being God really looks like. He performed many signs, wonders, and miracles. He lived a perfect life. And He sacrificed Himself for all of mankind. Kanye-like fame comes and goes, but there is only one who separated the light from the dark and created all. Look to Him today!

Have you Been Exposed? It Spreads More Easily Than You Thought!

The Ebola virus has everyone scared these days. Just what is it? Is there a cure? How do we stop it? As Dallas, TX becomes a city on edge, people everywhere want to know: How does it really spread?

Up until now, health officials have said that Ebola spreads through physical contact or bodily fluids only. But many health workers and scientists are now saying that those statements might have been premature. Ebola might travel through the air too!

For example, recently, Tribune News Service quoted Dr. C.J. Peters (who “led the CDC’s most far-reaching study of Ebola’s transmission in humans”) as saying that there is a possibility that Ebola spreads through air. “We just don’t have the data to exclude it,” said Peters. Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the CDC in Atlanta, agrees that the spread through coughing or sneezing can’t be ruled out.

The bottom line is: the disease might spread more easily than we knew. This happens all the time though. Scientists think they know how a disease spreads and then find out it is worse than they thought. Perhaps it happens in the church too. Are you aware that you might have been exposed to a far deadlier disease?

The Bible warned us a long time ago about a far more deadly disease that spreads easily through entire cultures. It began all the way back in Genesis. God told Adam & Eve, “You shall surely die,” but Satan said, “You shall surely not die” (Genesis 2:17; 3:4). The disease is sin, and it is the cause of our physical and spiritual deaths (Romans 6:23).

For far too long, people have felt immune because God has not caused physical, immediate death like an Ebola virus does. But as Peter reminded us, God is not slow in bringing punishment, but is patient, wanting us to repent of our sins (2 Peter 3:9).

Sin is a deadly disease. And it spreads more easily that you thought. Have you been exposed to the virus? Are you infected? Did you think you were immune? There is only one cure for sin: the forgiving blood of Jesus. Come to know Him today. Jesus gives us victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:57)!
