Where’s My Flying Car?

10-21-15, back to futureSo, by now, most people are aware that last week, Oct 21, 2015, was the date set in “Back to the Future 2” that Marty and Doc go to in the future. And many die-hard fans of the movie had parties or dressed up in “futuristic” costumes. But now, as the date has passed and the fervor is gone, I think there is a great lesson we can learn about making predictions.

You see, the movie projected several ideas of what life would look like in 2015, some right and some wrong. We have 3-D movies and videoconference calling now, but we have no hover boards, no shoes that tie their own laces, and no flying cars. Where are the flying cars???

The predictions, I suppose, weren’t that bad for 1989. In 1989, the idea of a video call on the TV was cool. But writers didn’t envision a world in which everyone had screens on phones doing Facetime. Other predictions, such as hover boards and flying cars just aren’t here yet, if they ever will be.

Making predictions can be fun. It is a novelty to guess what the future will be like. But we never get it exactly right. We can’t know, with certainty what the future will be. Or can we?

That is why the Bible is such an amazing book. God’s Word is always 100% accurate. Every prophecy is true; no Bible prediction has ever been proven false. Every single time God’s prophets spoke, whether about something in a week or in 1,000 years, their words have been accurate.

Romans 9:6 reminds us that God’s Word has never failed His children. Numbers 23:19 explains that God does not make human-like mistakes or change His mind. 2 Peter 1:20 declares that prophecy is not of human interpretation, but rather is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Because of the perfect track record of the Bible, we can trust it when it tells us that God desires to give us an eternal home in heaven. And that’s the future…for those who live according to His Word.
